About this dataset
This geodatabase contains the layers and tables for the Journey to Work commuting dashboard.
Commuting flows: The American Community Survey (ACS) measures commuting flows by identifying where commuters live and work, revealing how communities interconnect through the movement of people, goods, and services. Although not included in standard ACS products, these origin-destination flow data are crucial for defining metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) used by Federal, state, and local agencies in statistical reporting. To support the Office of Management and Budget's area delineations, the Census Bureau produces commuting flow tables every five years using 5-year ACS estimates, with occasional special project releases in interim years. These statistics are essential for understanding regional economic integration and supporting policy development. The most current commuting flows data is based on the 2016-2020 ACS 5-year estimates.
ACS data: Other commuting data (excluding commuting flows) were obtained from the ACS 5-year estimates (except for the year 2000, which is from the decennial census). The commuting-related questions asked are part of the standard ACS product. The most recent data is from the 2019-2023 ACS 5-year estimates.
