NoVA District Bike and Pedestrian Counts

Datathon 2025

Updated Oct 17, 2026

About this dataset

Methodology to convert 24hr/365 data to a representative 24 hour day:

•Bike and Pedestrian data was acquired from the public websites of Regional Transportation Data Clearinghouse (MWCOG) and from the Counter Dashboard of Arlington County for the time frame of November 2015 to January 2017.
•The data was analyzed for the period of one year (2016), but due to the fact that some counter stations had missing data for a month or more, it was necessary to fill that gap with data sets from the year of 2015 or 2017.
•Data was screened for consistency and quality, and as result, the outliers were removed from the dataset.
•Based on review of the counts observations, it was determined that during the four months of September and the three months after September, the volumes representing pedestrian and bicyclist activities were significantly higher and lower, respectively, when compared to these activities during September. Therefore, the month of September was identified as representative for the most typical pedestrian and bicyclist activity at the count station locations.
•Monthly counts for September were divided by the number of the days (30) which yielded a typical 24-hour count value that was utilized for the purpose of representing the bike and pedestrian activities at the count stations
